# Turn parts on and off

Moor started as a Dock. It can now take over a few more things on your Mac. Each one is a **part**, with its own switch. Only the Docks are on to begin with.

| Part | Stands in for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| **Docks** | The Dock | Glass docks on any edge and display, with profiles and live widgets. Always on. |
| [**Helm**](/docs/helm/) | ⌘Tab and window arranging | A window switcher with previews, snapping windows to halves and quarters, and saved layouts. |
| [**Mast**](/docs/mast/) | Menu bar icons | Hide and order menu bar icons, and put Moor's widgets in the menu bar. |
| [**Moor Bar**](/docs/moor-bar/) | The menu bar | Moor's own menu bar over Apple's: your layout, widgets, clock and look, on every display. |
| [**Deck**](/docs/deck/) | Desktop widgets | Moor's widgets, full size on your desktop under every window. |
| [**Hold**](/docs/hold/) | Finder | Your files by kind, plain-English search, downloads by source and clean-up. |
| [**Compass**](/docs/search/#compass) | Spotlight, on a shortcut you choose | Moor's search panel, grown: it also finds open windows, files anywhere in your folders in plain English, and Moor's own settings. |

Every Moor license and trial unlocks every part. Nothing here costs extra.

Each part also has a short overview page, with how it compares to what macOS has: [Helm](/helm/), [Mast](/mast/), [Moor Bar](/bar/), [Deck](/deck/) and [Hold](/hold/).

## Settings → Parts

Open **Settings → Parts**. Each part has a switch, the words **On** or **Off**, a line about what it does and which permissions it asks for. Turn a part on and it starts at once. Turn it off and it stops completely: its shortcuts, windows and menu bar items go away.

A part that's on gets its own page in the Settings sidebar, and its own submenu in Moor's menu bar menu where it has something to show. A part that's off has neither.

Each part asks macOS for a permission only when you turn it on, or when you first use the feature that needs it. See [Permissions](/docs/permissions/).

## Docks are always on

The Docks have no switch. They're what Moor is. The row says **Always on**.

## The first-run step

The [setup guide](/docs/getting-started/) has a step called **What should Moor take over?** It lists Helm, Mast, Moor Bar, Deck and Hold, all off. Turn on what you want, or leave them. You can change any of them later in Settings → Parts.

## If you already had Moor

After you update, Moor shows a **New in Moor** sheet once. It lists the parts you haven't seen. Nothing in it is on. Turn on what you like, then choose **Done**. Closing the sheet any way also counts, and it won't come back.

If you had the Window Switcher turned on in Moor 1.4, Helm is on for you after the update, so the switcher keeps working. Nothing else is turned on for you.

## From the command line

`moor parts` lists the parts and which are on. It needs Moor running, with **Settings → Automation → Let apps and agents control Moor** on.

```sh
moor parts                  # one line per part: on or off, its name, what it replaces
moor parts --json           # the same, as JSON
moor parts enable helm      # turn a part on
moor parts disable helm     # turn it off
```

Docks can't be turned off. Agents and scripts can do the same through the [local API and MCP tool](/docs/api/#parts).
