# When the dock is full

Open a lot of apps and a dock runs out of room. Moor never folds the extra apps into a pile you can't use. Every open app stays a real icon with its usual menu, badge and drag, and Moor makes room in this order.

## 1. Icons shrink

Icons, spacing and padding get smaller together, down to **36 points**. If you already chose smaller icons, they stay as you set them. Nothing else changes until the icons reach that size. (Only a dock whose pinned items don't fit at 36 points goes smaller. See [If your pinned items don't fit](#if-your-pinned-items-don-t-fit).)

## 2. Widgets step down

If your pinned items alone are still too wide at 36 points, widgets get narrower, one step at a time: extra wide, then wide, then icon size.

## 3. Running apps scroll

Only the **running apps** section moves. Your pinned apps, folders and widgets stay where they are. The open apps scroll along the dock like a strip:

- **Scroll** with the mouse wheel or two fingers on the trackpad while the pointer is over the running apps.
- **Chevrons** at each end of the strip jump one page. They show only where there is more to see. Each one takes clicks 44 points across the dock and up to 44 points along it, stopping short of the middles of the icons beside it so those stay clickable (about 38 points along at the smallest icon size).
- **Edge fades.** The icon at an end that has more beyond it fades, so you can tell the strip continues.
- **VoiceOver.** Each icon is a button, and VoiceOver brings an icon into view when it reaches it. The chevrons are buttons too, named “Show earlier running apps” and “Show later running apps”.

### Which apps you see

- The **app in front** is always in view. Switch to an app that is off the edge and the strip scrolls to it.
- **Recently used apps** share the view when that costs nothing, so the apps you just used are the ones showing.
- If you scroll away from the front app, the strip stays where you put it until you switch to a different app.
- The order is yours. Moor remembers the order of your open apps, even when one quits and opens again. Drag an open app along the running apps to reorder it.

Every icon in the strip works like any other: click to open or bring forward, right-click for the menu (windows, Hide, Quit, **Keep in Dock**), and drag to pin it.

## Wrap into two rows

If you'd rather see more apps at once, choose **Settings → Docks**, pick the dock, and set **Running apps** to **Wrap to 2 rows**. The running apps then fill two rows, and scroll by whole columns only if two rows still aren't enough. Wrapping applies to bars. A dock that uses the Islands theme, and a dock in edit mode, show one row that scrolls.

## If your pinned items don't fit

The running apps are the only part that scrolls. If the apps, folders and widgets you pinned are wider than the display even at 36 points, the icons get smaller than 36 points, the way Apple's Dock does, down to **16 points**. The open apps, their chevrons and the Trash stay on the dock, so you can still click them.

Icons that small are hard to use, and a dock with more pinned items than fit even at 16 points runs past the edge of the screen. To get bigger icons back, take some items out of that dock, or put a second dock on another edge of the screen. See [Docks](/docs/docks/).

## Questions

**Is anything hidden?** No. Every open app is in the strip.

**Where did the “+3” folder go?** Earlier versions of Moor folded extra apps into a folder tile. It's gone: the strip replaces it.

**Does it change my pinned order?** No. Only the running apps section moves.
