# Why Your Mac Dock Is Slow to Pop Up, and How to Fix the Delay

A hidden Mac Dock feels slow for two reasons: a pause before it starts moving, and the slide animation itself. Apple's Mac Help describes auto-hide as an on/off setting and mentions no speed or delay control, so most guides send you to Terminal defaults write commands. If you'd rather skip commands, each Moor dock can automatically hide and show, with a show delay and a hide delay, set per dock in Settings → Docks.

You turn on auto-hide to get more room on screen. Then every trip to the bottom edge turns into a short wait while the Dock decides whether to show up. If that wait bugs you, here's what causes it, how much is actually known about the popular Terminal fix, and how to get a quicker dock without typing commands.

## Why the hidden Dock waits before it appears

Apple's description of the setting is simple: [hide the Dock when you're not using it, and move the pointer to the screen edge to show it](https://support.apple.com/en-asia/guide/mac-help/mchlp1119/14.0/mac). The setting is in **System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Automatically hide and show the Dock**, which is where it lives on Golden Gate, Tahoe, Sequoia and Sonoma, and you can [toggle it from anywhere with Option-Command-D](https://osxdaily.com/2024/01/23/how-automatically-hide-show-dock-mac/).

What feels like one slow Dock is really two separate timings:

- **The delay.** This is the [pause before the Dock starts sliding out](https://macpaw.com/how-to/dock-slow-to-appear) after your pointer reaches the edge. Terminal guides such as [Jo Gruber's](https://jogruber.de/blog/how-to-speed-up-the-animations-of-a-hidden-macos-dock) change it through a hidden key called `autohide-delay`. That guide doesn't say which macOS versions it was tested on.
- **The animation.** This is how fast the slide runs once it starts. Guides change it through a hidden key called `autohide-time-modifier`. The macos-defaults.com reference gives [0.5 seconds as the default for the opening and closing animations](https://macos-defaults.com/dock/autohide-time-modifier.html), on the versions it tested (listed below).

It helps to know which one bothers you. If the Dock hesitates and then moves quickly, the delay is your problem. If it starts right away but drifts in slowly, it's the animation.

Apple's own description of the auto-hide setting covers turning it on and showing the Dock from the screen edge. It doesn't mention a control for the delay or the slide speed, which is why the guides above reach for Terminal.

## What about the Terminal defaults keys?

Most guides suggest writing those two hidden keys with `defaults write` and then restarting the Dock. This article doesn't walk through those commands, because the testing behind them doesn't cover macOS Tahoe, and for one key it isn't documented at all:

- **The animation key's testing stops at Sequoia.** macos-defaults.com lists `autohide-time-modifier` as [tested on Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina and Mojave](https://macos-defaults.com/dock/autohide-time-modifier.html). Tahoe (macOS 26) isn't on that list, so whether the key works there is unconfirmed.
- **The delay key has no listed versions.** [Jo Gruber's write-up](https://jogruber.de/blog/how-to-speed-up-the-animations-of-a-hidden-macos-dock), the source here for `autohide-delay`, gives no macOS versions or date. So whether that key works on any current macOS, Tahoe included, is unknown from these sources.
- **On tested versions, the animation key needs auto-hide.** The reference says it [requires the Dock's autohide setting to be true](https://macos-defaults.com/dock/autohide-time-modifier.html).
- **Guides differ in the details.** macos-defaults.com writes the animation key as a float, while [MacPaw's guide](https://macpaw.com/how-to/dock-slow-to-appear) writes it as an integer (`-int 0`).
- **How each guide undoes it.** Jo Gruber's guide reverts the delay by deleting the `autohide-delay` key. [MacPaw's guide](https://macpaw.com/how-to/dock-slow-to-appear) undoes the animation change by deleting `autohide-time-modifier`, and its full reset deletes three keys: `autohide`, `autohide-delay` and `autohide-time-modifier`. If you follow any guide, check whether it says it covers the macOS version you run.
- **Separate Dock reports on Tahoe.** One Mac mini user on Tahoe [reported a Dock that wouldn't come up properly after waking from the screen saver](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/256140771). That problem has been reported on its own, so don't assume a stuck Dock is caused by a tweak.

## Set auto-hide delays in a Moor dock instead

Dock replacement apps can offer delay settings in their own interface. For example, Appish's blog says its own app, Dockish, has a [Reveal Delay setting adjustable up to 2 seconds](https://appish.app/blog/mac-dock-spring-animations-smooth-120hz), applied the same to every dock.

Moor is a Dock replacement for macOS 26 (Tahoe) and later. Among each Moor dock's behavior options is **Automatically hide and show**, with a show delay and a hide delay, so there's nothing to type. Each profile has one of three Dock modes, set in [Settings → Profiles](/docs/profiles/):

- **Apple's Dock**: Moor switches the real Dock's apps and settings. Nothing new appears on screen.
- **Moor only**: Apple's Dock hides and your Moor docks appear.
- **Both**: Apple's Dock stays, and Moor's docks appear too.

For Moor's delay settings to matter, use **Moor only** or **Both**.

1. [Download Moor](https://moorapp.com/download), drag it into Applications and open it. In the setup guide, choose **Moor's dock**. Moor saves your current Dock before it changes anything. (Full walkthrough: [How to Set Up Moor](/blog/how-to-set-up-moor-dock).)
2. Press Control-Option-E to edit your docks, then click **Settings…** in the toolbar. That opens the dock's page in **Settings → Docks**. You can also open Settings from the Moor menu bar icon and go to **Docks**.
3. Pick the dock you want. Each dock has its own page with a live preview, placement, behavior, theme and items.
4. In its behavior options, turn on **Automatically hide and show** and adjust the show delay and hide delay that come with it.
5. Click **Done** in edit mode, or press Control-Option-E again.

To be clear about the limits: Moor's docs describe a show delay and a hide delay, not a separate control for slide speed. If a dock sits on an edge shared by two displays, it [fades instead of sliding](/docs/docks/), and that edge is "sticky" so you can still bring the dock up.

## Tips for a dock that shows up when you want it

Delay is only part of it. These Moor dock options from **Settings → Docks** help too:

| Setting | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically hide and show | Hides the dock, with a show delay and a hide delay | Small laptop screens |
| Hide when an app is fullscreen | Keeps the dock out of fullscreen apps | Video, presentations |
| Hide while using | Hides the dock in apps you choose | A game or a video editor |
| Opacity when idle | Fades the dock when you're not using it | Keeping it visible but quiet |
| Placement | Bottom, left, right or top edge, on the display you choose | Wide or vertical monitors |

Some setups that work well:

- **Different behavior for different places.** Each dock has its own behavior settings, and each [profile](/docs/profiles/) chooses which docks it shows. You might use an auto-hiding dock on the laptop and an always-visible dock at your desk. Switch with Control-Option-1 to 9, or have Moor switch for you under **Settings → Automation → Monitor setups** when you plug in a display.
- **Quick to show, slower to hide.** A short show delay with a longer hide delay means the dock appears quickly but doesn't vanish while your pointer is still moving toward an icon.
- **A side dock that rarely gets in the way.** A dock on the left or right edge with auto-hide stays clear of anything along the bottom of your windows. See [a dock on every monitor](/blog/mac-dock-on-every-monitor) for multi-display layouts.
- **You don't always need the mouse.** Control-Option-F opens Moor's search across your docks and apps, which is often quicker than waiting for any dock. More in [Mac Dock keyboard shortcuts](/blog/mac-dock-keyboard-shortcuts).

## Troubleshooting a Dock that won't appear

**Option-Command-D stopped working.** The shortcut is set in **System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Launchpad & Dock → Turn Dock Hiding On/Off**. You can [reassign it there if another app took it](https://trymainspring.com/blog/hide-dock-keyboard-shortcut-mac). Using it changes the same checkbox as Desktop & Dock, and the setting stays after a restart.

**Apple's Dock gets stuck hidden on Tahoe.** In the [Apple Community thread](https://discussions.apple.com/thread/256140771), people got it back by turning the Desktop & Dock setting off and on, restarting the Dock with `killall Dock`, or pressing Option-Command-D. A more drastic suggestion in that thread was to move the `com.apple.dock.plist` preferences file out of Library → Preferences and restart. That throws away your Dock settings, so try the gentler fixes first.

**You tried a Terminal tweak and want it gone.** Use the undo steps from the guide you followed: Jo Gruber's deletes the `autohide-delay` key, and [MacPaw's](https://macpaw.com/how-to/dock-slow-to-appear) deletes `autohide-time-modifier`, or all three Dock keys for a full reset. Neither guide confirms these steps on Tahoe, and Jo Gruber's lists no tested versions at all.

**Apple's Dock shows up next to Moor's.** The active profile is set to **Apple's Dock** or **Both**. If you want only Moor's docks, change that profile's mode to **Moor only** in **Settings → Profiles**. Keep **Both** if you like having the two side by side, or **Apple's Dock** if you want Moor to manage only the real Dock. If you ever want your old Dock back, quit Moor, or choose **Manage Profiles → Restore Original Dock…** from the menu bar.

## Next steps

- Figure out which part feels slow: the pause or the slide.
- Before running a Terminal guide, check whether it says it was tested on the macOS version you use. If it lists no versions, treat it as untested.
- If you'd rather not run hidden-key commands that aren't confirmed on Tahoe, set up a Moor dock and turn on Automatically hide and show in **Settings → Docks**.
- Read the [Docks documentation](/docs/docks/) for every placement and behavior option.

## Common questions

### Why does my Mac Dock take so long to appear when auto-hide is on?

There are two timings. First comes a pause before the Dock starts moving, which Terminal guides change with a hidden key called autohide-delay. Then comes the slide animation, changed with autohide-time-modifier, which macos-defaults.com lists at 0.5 seconds by default on the versions it tested. Apple's Mac Help describes auto-hide without mentioning a speed or delay control, so guides point to Terminal or to a dock app with its own delay settings.

### What is the difference between autohide-delay and autohide-time-modifier?

autohide-delay sets how long the Dock waits before it starts sliding out after your pointer reaches the screen edge. autohide-time-modifier sets how fast the slide runs once it starts. They are separate hidden keys that Terminal guides change independently. If your Dock hesitates and then moves quickly, the delay is the issue. If it starts right away but moves slowly, it's the animation.

### Do the Terminal defaults commands for the Dock work on macOS Tahoe?

That isn't confirmed for either key. macos-defaults.com lists autohide-time-modifier as tested on Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina and Mojave, but not Tahoe. Jo Gruber's guide to autohide-delay lists no tested versions at all. To undo, that guide deletes autohide-delay, while MacPaw deletes autohide-time-modifier or, for a full reset, three Dock keys. A dock app with its own delay settings avoids the question.

### Can I change the Dock's show and hide delay without Terminal?

For Apple's Dock, Apple's Mac Help describes auto-hide as an on/off setting and doesn't mention a delay control. Dock replacement apps can add their own: Appish says its Dockish app has a Reveal Delay of up to 2 seconds. In Moor, open Settings → Docks, pick a dock and turn on Automatically hide and show, which comes with a show delay and a hide delay. Each Moor dock keeps its own settings.

### What is the keyboard shortcut to hide or show the Dock on a Mac?

Option-Command-D turns Automatically hide and show the Dock on or off. It's the same checkbox as in System Settings → Desktop & Dock, and the setting stays after a restart. If the shortcut stops working, check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Launchpad & Dock → Turn Dock Hiding On/Off, where you can assign it again.
